Biography: Girma Gonfa Hunde is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Head of the Biotechnology and Bioprocess Center of Excellence at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Ethiopia. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia, before joining Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia, an MSc in Chemical Engineering with a major in Environmental Engineering from Addis Ababa University, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University. His research focuses on separation processes, ionic liquids, biomass valorization, low-cost adsorbents for water purification, biomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, and molecular and multiscale modelling. He has extensive experience in academic leadership, research management, postgraduate supervision, and scientific publishing.

Dr. Zinabu Hailu Siyum
Assistant Professor of Food Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Adigrat University, Adigrat, Ethiopia.

Biography: Zinabu Hailu Siyum is an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department with over six years of teaching, research, and academic leadership experience. His expertise includes food biophysics, food quality and safety, food processing and optimization, non-destructive techniques, machine vision, NIR spectroscopy, and food measurement and characterization. He holds a PhD in Food Science from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Hungary (2026), an MSc in Food Engineering from Addis Ababa University (2016), and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Adama Science and Technology University (2013), Ethiopia. He has over six years of experience as a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Adigrat University, Ethiopia, and has served in leadership roles including Research Head and Director of Beles Institute. He has authored/co-authored more than 20 scientific publications, with a Google Scholar H-index of 7 and 125 citations. He received international research awards from ISHS (2024, Romania) and WARESA Europe (2025, Germany).

Biography: Ts. Dr. Berihun Mamo Negash is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. With over a decade of academic and research experience, Dr. Berihun has been actively involved in teaching, supervision, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary research in petroleum and energy engineering. His research focuses on reservoir modelling and simulation, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), shale and unconventional reservoirs, and the application of machine learning and data-driven approaches to reservoir engineering problems. Dr. Berihun has published extensively in high-impact international journals and has contributed to several research and consultancy projects funded by academic and industry partners. His Google Scholar profile reports more than 2,800 citations, with an h-index of 29 and i10-index of 56, reflecting the impact of his research contributions in reservoir engineering, EOR, shale gas technologies, and carbon storage. He is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions through innovative research, industry collaboration, and the development of future engineering professionals.

 


Dr. Tigabwa Yosef Ahmed

Dr. Tigabwa Yosef Ahmed

Biography: Dr. Tigabwa Yosef Ahmed is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia. She earned her PhD from Monash University, Australia, in 2018, followed by a post-doctoral research fellowship at UTP. Her expertise integrates experimental methodologies with multiscale molecular simulation and advanced process modelling. Beyond her research, Dr. Tigabwa is actively involved in teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and holds key academic coordination and departmental responsibilities.


Dr. Kibrom Alebel Gebru

Biography: Dr. Kibrom Alebel Gebru is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Adigrat University, Ethiopia. He received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University in 2008, MSc from Addis Ababa University in 2012, and PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India, in 2017. Following his PhD, he joined Adigrat University, where he contributed to the establishment of an MSc program and initiated research activities in materials and environmental engineering. In 2021, he joined the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His work focused on membrane fabrication, surface modification, adsorptive membrane systems, and fouling-resistant membrane technologies for water treatment. He led the development of reactive hydrogel coatings for desalination membranes and contributed to scaling membrane modification technologies from laboratory studies to pilot-scale demonstrations in collaboration with industrial partners. He also has experience in establishing membrane fabrication and testing infrastructure, including specification, procurement, installation, and commissioning of semi-pilot-scale equipment. Dr. Gebru is actively involved in the international membrane research community through the European Membrane Society and African Membrane Society. He currently serves as a Board Member and Co-Director of the Science and Technology Unit of the African Membrane Society and served on the Organizing Committee of the 4th African Membrane Society International Congress (AMSIC 4) in 2024. His research interests include advanced membrane materials, polymeric membranes, electrospun materials, membrane surface functionalization, adsorber membranes, and sustainable separation processes for environmental, biomedical, and energy applications.

Biography: Metadel Kassahun Abera is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and Postharvest Technology Chair Holder at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. He received his PhD in Bioscience Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, an MSc in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University. He has extensive experience in food and bioprocess engineering, postharvest technology, biotechnology, biomass valorization, renewable bioenergy, environmental biotechnology, and computational modelling of biological systems. His research includes multiscale modelling, food process optimization, fermentation, postharvest preservation, biomass-to-biofuel conversion, and biological wastewater and water-treatment technologies. He has served in academic leadership and research management roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering and Postharvest Technology Chair Holder, and has supervised and is supervising 24 MSc and 13 PhD students. Dr. Mulu Alemayehu Abate

Biography: Mulu Alemayehu Abate is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Ethiopian Institute of Technology Mekelle (EIT-M), Mekelle University, Ethiopia. He is an Associate Fellow of the Society for Energy, Materials & Sustainability (SEMS), a distinction conferred on April 2, 2026 (Certificate No. SEMS-26A0409). Dr. Mulu earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Nano Chemistry) from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Taipei, Taiwan. He also holds an M.Sc. in Inorganic Chemistry from Arba Minch University and a B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry from Mada Walabu University. His research interests include renewable energy technologies, nanomaterials for energy applications, computational materials science, quantum dot solar cells, and perovskite solar cells. His work focuses on advancing sustainable energy technologies through innovative materials design and computational modeling. In addition to his research, Dr. Mulu has extensive experience in academic leadership, research management, postgraduate supervision, and scientific publishing, contributing to the advancement of engineering education and research at both national and international levels.

Biography: Yalew Woldeamanuel Sitotaw is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU), Ethiopia. Before joining Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, he served as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. He earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from KU Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), Belgium, and also holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering (Process Engineering and Design) from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. He received an MSc in Engineering Rheology through the joint Erasmus Mundus program from KU Leuven, Belgium, and the University of Minho, Portugal, an MSc in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Process Engineering from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. His research focuses on the application of process-intensification approaches, including ultrasonication, mechanochemical processes and green solvents for the synthesis of biofuels, biomaterials, and value-added chemicals from agro-industrial wastes; polymer and composite processing and characterization for diverse applications; process design and optimization; process intensification and integration; product design and development. Dr. Redae Nuguse Berhe 

Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering and Faculty member of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Ethiopian Institute of Technology Mekelle (EIT-M), Mekelle University, Ethiopia.

Research areas: Advanced water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, and persistent contaminant removal, electro-Fenton oxidation, electrode ionization, and bio-electrochemical systems, biological processes, biofilm reactors, nutrient removal and recovery.

Biography: Redae Nuguse Berhe is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. His research focuses on advanced wastewater treatment and resource recovery, with particular emphasis on environmental electrochemistry, electro-Fenton oxidation, biofilm-based treatment, nutrient removal and recovery, electrodeionization, and the treatment of persistent contaminants. He has completed postdoctoral research appointments at Western University in Canada and the University of Seoul in South Korea, where he contributed to the development of sustainable and resource-oriented water-treatment technologies. He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Addis Ababa University and completed his graduate studies in Biochemical Engineering at Addis Ababa University and undergraduate studies in Biological and Chemical Engineering at Mekelle University. His scholarly work addresses bio-electrochemical systems, electrocatalytic oxidation, nitrogen recovery, wastewater nutrient management, and water reuse. He also has experience in lecturing, research supervision, scientific publishing, and interdisciplinary environmental research.


Prof. Nigus Gabbiye Habtu
Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Executive Director for Community Engagement and Industry-Linkage, Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Research areas: Process Intensification; Catalysis and Catalytic Reactor Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Advanced Oxidation Process and Wastewater Treatment; Renewable Energy; Biomass Valorization; Process Modeling and Simulation.

Biography: Professor Nigus Gabbiye Habtu is a Chemical and Environmental Engineering professor with over 20 years of teaching, research, and academic leadership experience. His expertise encompasses process intensification and optimization, renewable energy, wastewater and water treatment, catalytic reactor engineering, and biomass and waste valorization. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University (2001), an MSc in Chemical Engineering (Process Engineering) from Addis Ababa University (2004), and a PhD in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering from Rovira i Virgili University, Spain (2011), with visiting research experience at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands. He has supervised over 35 PhD (22 completed), 115 MSc, and 70 undergraduate students, and hosted 12 visiting scholars. He has authored/co-authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications, 65 book chapters and conference proceedings, with a Scopus H-index of 36, i10-index of 85, and over 3,700 citations. He has led or contributed to more than 10 international projects addressing sustainable energy, environmental protection, and rural livelihoods. His current research focuses on process intensification and integration, wastewater treatment (AOP), biomass pretreatment, bioenergy (anaerobic digestion), solar-biogas integration, catalytic materials for energy conversion/storage, and innovative energy entrepreneurship. He currently leads major DAAD-, EU/Erasmus+-, and JICA-funded initiatives. He has served as Scientific Director/Vice President of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Dean of Research and Graduate School, and Department Head. His honors include Best Technology Project Award (2023), Best Paper Award (2023), Spanish Doctoral Scholarship (2010), and Ethiopian Society of Chemical Engineers Scholastic Award (2001).


Dr. Ashenafi Hailu Berta 

Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering department at Adama Science and Technology University, Adama, Ethiopia.

Research areas: Ashenafi Hailu Berta’s research interests span a wide range of topics in chemical engineering and environmental sustainability. His work focuses on catalyst synthesis and light olefin production, alongside advanced separation processes and environmental engineering applications. He is deeply engaged in biomass utilization, adsorption and water treatment, and the development of innovative biomaterials. His expertise also extends to energy generation and utilization, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing sustainable technologies and addressing global challenges in energy and the environment. 

Biography: Ashenafi Hailu Berta is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Adama Science and Technology University, Ethiopia. He began his academic career at Bahir Dar University, where he advanced from Graduate Assistant II to Lecturer. During his tenure at Bahir Dar, he held several leadership positions within the Faculty of Engineering, including Department Head and Director of the School of Chemical and Food Engineering.  He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology, South Korea, specializing in Advanced Materials and Chemical Engineering. He earned his M.Sc. in Process Engineering from the University of Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain, and his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. His professional journey reflects a strong commitment to teaching, research, and academic leadership in the field of chemical engineering. He was awarded the prestigious International Climate Protection Fellowship (Internationales Klimaschutzstipendium) by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation during the 2013/2014 academic cycle. As a Humboldt Fellow, he conducted research in Germany at the Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin (now Berliner Hochschule für Technik), under the mentorship of Professor Dr.-Ing. Maria Loroch. His fellowship experience strengthened his expertise in climate protection and international collaboration, further enriching his academic and professional contributions in chemical engineering. Dr. Tesfayesus Zinare Mamo

Biography:Dr. Tesfayesus Zinare Mamo is an Assistant Professor of Process Systems and Environmental Engineering at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, and President of the Ethiopian Society of Chemical Engineers (ESChE). He holds a PhD in Process Systems and Environmental Engineering from the Federal University of Toulouse, France, where his research focused on the integrated strategic, tactical, and operational planning of sugarcane-based biomass-to-biofuel supply chains using optimization, surrogate modeling, and life cycle assessment. His research and professional interests span process systems engineering, renewable energy and bioenergy, biofuel production and supply chains, sustainable industrial systems, circular economy, and environmental sustainability. He has experience in applied research, project management, feasibility studies, strategic planning, and consultancy across energy, agro-processing, and industrial sectors, with professional and academic experience in Ethiopia and Europe. Dr. Tesfayesus has contributed to peer-reviewed research in bioenergy, process optimization, sustainability assessment, and supply chain systems. As President of ESChE, he provides strategic leadership to a national professional society of more than 2,000 members and promotes collaboration among academia, industry, government, and development partners to advance chemical engineering and sustainable industrial development in Ethiopia


Dr. Ali Shemsedin Reshad

Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Biography:Dr. Ali Shemsedin Reshad is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has over 15 years of experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, and research management. Dr. Ali received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati), India, an M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), India, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. His research focuses primarily on bioenergy production through chemical and thermochemical conversion processes, the synthesis of materials for biofuel production and waste water treatment, mineral processing and environmental engineering. His broader research interests include biomass conversion and pretreatment, biofuel synthesis, waste biomass valorization for fuel production, heterogeneous catalysts and adsorbents, process optimization, and reaction kinetics. Dr. Ali has extensive experience in the analysis and interpretation of data generated using advanced characterization and analytical techniques, including TGA, DSC, NMR, SEM-EDX/FESEM-EDX, FTIR, TGA-FTIR, BET, GC-MS, LC-MS, rheometry, and other analytical techniques. In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Ali has held academic leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Head of the Sustainable Energy Center of Excellence at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. He also has experience in research management, postgraduate supervision, curriculum development, and scientific publishing.


Prof. Solomon Workneh Fanta

Dean, Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering, Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Research areas: postharvest technology; food processing; transport phenomena; bio systems engineering; sustainable processing; and renewable bioenergy systems.

Biography: Prof. Solomon Workneh Fanta earned his PhD in Bioscience Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2013, an M.Tech in Process Engineering and Design from IIT Delhi, India, in 2007, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar Institute of Technology in 2004. He has extensive academic and administrative experience. He has served as Professor at BiT since 2023, has been Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering since February 2024. Over the course of his academic career, he has held several leadership positions, including Head of Postharvest Technology, PhD Coordinator (V/Dean), Director of the Faculty, and Head of the Chemical Engineering Department. His research and professional activities focus on postharvest technology, food processing, transport phenomena, bio systems engineering, sustainable processing, and energy-related applications. He has led and participated in numerous national and international research and development projects in collaboration with institutions in Ethiopia, Belgium, the UK, Austria, South Africa and other partners. His recent work includes intelligent packaging, technologies for reducing postharvest losses, and numerical modeling of spent coffee-ground torrefaction for sustainable energy production. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and has supervised and co-supervised a substantial number of MSc and PhD students. In addition to his research and teaching contributions, he has actively engaged in academic conferences, professional organizations, institutional development, and community service.


Dr. Mebrahtom Gebresemati Weldehans

Research Assistant Professor, School of Chemical, Biological & Battery Engineering, Gachon University, South Korea

Research areas: Electrochemical energy storage; Lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries; Sodium-ion batteries; Advanced battery materials; Electrolyte and interface engineering; Nanomaterials and nanoionics; Computational materials science; DFT calculations and MD simulations; Machine learning (ML)-assisted materials discovery.

Biography:Mebrahtom Gebresemati Weldehans is a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Chemical, Biological & Battery Engineering at Gachon University, South Korea. He earned his PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering (Nanoscience & Technology) from Gachon University, specializing in advanced battery materials, electrolyte and interface engineering, and lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. He also holds an M.Eng. in the same field from Gachon University and a B.Sc. in Biological and Chemical Engineering from Mekelle Institute of Technology/Mekelle University, Ethiopia. His research combines experimental electrochemistry and materials synthesis with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular dynamics (MD), multiscale modelling, and AI/ML to design and discover advanced energy-storage materials. He also has research experience in sustainable materials, biomass and waste-to-energy, bioelectrochemical systems, wastewater treatment, environmental remediation, and resource recovery. He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications and contributes to the scientific community through peer-review activities. Dr. Mebrahtom has teaching, research supervision, and mentoring experience in chemical and biochemical engineering, electrochemistry, energy, biotechnology, and sustainability.


Dr Aberham Hailu Feyissa

Associate Professor of Food Process Engineering, National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark.

Biography:Aberham Hailu Feyissa is an Associate Professor of Food Process Engineering at Food Production Engineering, National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Before that, he also held both postdoctoral and Assistant Professor positions at DTU. He received his PhD in Robust modelling of heat and mass transfer in the processing of solid foods (Process Engineering) from DTU, Denmark; MSc in Food Tech. (postharvest process and preservation engineering), from KU Leuven and Ghent University, Belgium; and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. His research focuses on sustainable food processing and mechanistic understanding and modelling of food processing systems, with particular emphasis on transport phenomena, coupled heat and mass transfer, multiphysics simulation, and digital twins for both conventional and emerging food manufacturing processes. His research integrates first-principles modelling (physics-based) and data-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence, to improve process performance and energy efficiency, product quality, food safety, and sustainability. His current interests include sustainable food processing, hybrid mechanistic-AI modelling, process digitalisation, and advanced predictive tools for food processes. He has contributed extensively to advancing modelling to understand and predict food processing operations. Twice awarded First Prize as Outstanding Chemical Engineering Student of the Year by the Ethiopian Society of Chemical Engineers.
